Understanding the Gut-Skin Connection

Did you know that your gut health and skin microbiome are closely connected? They communicate through the gut-skin axis, which allows for a constant exchange of information between these two systems. This means that the health of your gut can directly impact the condition of your skin, and vice versa.

This connection between gut health and skin conditions is supported by research. When your gut is not happy, your skin may show signs of inflammation.

How Your Gut Health Affects Your Skin

When your gut microbiome is imbalanced, meaning there is an overgrowth of harmful bacteria or a lack of diversity in beneficial bacteria, it can lead to inflammation in the body. This inflammation can manifest on your skin in the form of acne, eczema, rosacea, or other skin conditions. On the other hand, a healthy gut microbiome with a diverse range of beneficial bacteria can help support a strong skin barrier and reduce inflammation. By promoting a healthy gut, you can potentially improve your skin health as well. So, how can you take care of your gut to support your skin?

The Role of Epithelial Cells and Imbalanced Gut Microbiota

A major role is played by the epithelial cells, which form an impermeable barrier on the gut lining. It's like having your own personal bouncers standing at the entrance of a club (your bloodstream), only letting in VIP guests (nutrients) while keeping out the troublemakers (inflammatory substances). But what happens when these bouncers start getting lax?

Imbalanced gut microbiota, also known as dysbiosis, can weaken this barrier function of epithelial cells. The result? Unwanted inflammatory substances get a pass into your bloodstream, triggering immune responses. The party in your body turns into a rowdy brawl causing inflammation which can manifest as skin issues like acne, eczema, psoriasis and more.

What Your Skin is Saying About Your Gut Health

Symptoms are the language of the body. When there are imbalances in your body, they present as problematic skin conditions or other unwanted symtpoms like digestive upset or fatigue. Don't fret. This is just your body telling you to make adjustments to return to a state of balance - and those adjustments might not be as difficult as you think.

Let's dive into the gut-skin connection and learn how acne, eczema, psoriasis and even inflammatory bowel disease can all be connected to your gut health.

1. Acne

Acne, a frequent unwelcome guest during our teenage years and beyond, is often linked to an imbalance in gut bacteria. Studies suggest that individuals with acne are more likely to have an altered gut microbiota compared to those with clear skin.

I developed acne in my mid-twenties and could not figure out how to get rid of it. It showed up as dozens of tiny pimples on my forehead and chest and it didn't matter how expensive my skincare products were or how many chemical peels I had, nothing seemed to get rid of the acne.

To my surprise, drinking ONE cup of this Glow herbal tea blend made an immediate difference in my skin. The redness went down, and within about a week of drinking the tea my acne subsided almost completely. At the same time, my morning stomach aches went away. At this point, I hadn't changed anything about my diet, (darn sweet tooth gets me everytime) the only change I made was drinking the Glow blend. More on that later!

2. Eczema

Next on the list is eczema, a condition characterized by itchy, red, and inflamed skin. It's believed that when the gut's barrier function becomes compromised (a.k.a. leaky gut), inflammatory substances may sneak into the bloodstream, triggering immune responses that surface as eczema.

3. Psoriasis

Let's now turn our attention to psoriasis, an autoimmune condition that causes scaly, red patches on the skin. People with psoriasis often struggle with gut issues too, suggesting an intricate relationship between gut health and this skin condition.

4. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Last but not least, there’s also a close connection between poor gut health and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD sufferers often report various skin issues – perhaps not surprising given the role of the gut in inflammation and immune response.

In essence, these conditions hint at a more complex picture: these aren't just skin-deep problems but reflect deeper imbalances within our bodies - particularly in our guts.

Nurturing Your Gut With Herbs for Clearer, Healthier Skin

Feeding your gut the right stuff is like throwing a garden party where the dress code strictly says "bring your friends." Let's talk about prebiotics, probiotics, and dietary fibers — they're like the VIP guests that make sure the party in your gut is bumping with beneficial bacteria.

The Power of Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Fibers

  • Prebiotics: Think of these as the snacks for your gut's good bacteria. Foods like garlic, onions, and bananas aren't just tasty — they're prebiotic powerhouses that fuel those friendly microbes. Same thing with sourdough bread - replace your white bread with sourdough and you'll enjoy all of the nutritional and prebiotic benefits without compromising taste!
  • Probiotics: These are the live bacteria that join the party directly. Cue fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut to bring in reinforcements for your gut flora. Just watch out for those sneaky grams of sugar added to yogurt!
  • Fibers: Ah, dietary fibers, the unsung heroes. They don't just help keep things moving; they also support a diverse microbiome. Apples, oats, and beans are like fiber DJs, keeping the beat going.

Herbal Teas for Liver Detoxification + Glowing Skin

When I first started struggling with acne, I wasn't prepared to make the recommended lifestyle changes to help my skin heal. A demanding work schedule meant I was eating on-the-go a lot, and the accompanying high stress levels also made me crave sweets. In the back of my mind I knew I needed to change some of my unhealthy habits, but doing so felt daunting and like it wasn't as important as doing what I needed to do to get through the day.

That's where herbal tea came in for the win: herbs will meet you right where you're at. I didn't have to change or give up anything just yet, all I had to do was incorporate a cup or two of tea into my daily routine. No problem!

Working with herbs like dandelion and burdock root had such an impact on my well-being that I was inspired to make the other changes needed to support my liver & kidneys. It's a marathon, not a sprint, so start with small lifestyle changes and build on them over time.

Best Herbs for Liver Detox & Digestive Support

The below list includes some of the key herbs I used on my journey to glowing skin. I noticed an immediate difference with regards to my digestive health (no more 5am stomach-ache wake up calls) and also with my skin. That being said, it's important to give the herbs several weeks to make an impact in your body.

  • Burdock Root: A botanical bouncer, burdock root helps escort out unwanted guests (toxins) from the body and supports digestion. Burdock is a potent blood cleanser and because of its high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it has also been shown heal liver cells from damage caused by alcohol, acetaminophen, or other liver-damaging toxins.
  • Dandelion Root: This sunny little weed is a powerhouse for detoxification. It supports liver function, and because it's a diuretic, it helps to flush out toxins that would otherwise leave you breaking out. It's packed with antioxidants that keep your skin looking as fresh as a, well...dandelion :,)
  • Licorice Root: Sweet, sweet licorice isn't just candy; it's a skin-soother extraordinaire. It may reduce redness and irritation, making it a go-to for people with sensitive skin. Just be mindful if you have high blood pressure or are taking any medications, as licorice root may interfere with the absorption of medications.
  • Nettles: Stinging nettles won't sting when brewed! Instead, they provide antihistamine properties that might help nip those allergic skin reactions in the bud.
  • Green Tea: Packed with antioxidants called catechins, green tea helps protect the liver from oxidative stress and supports detoxification processes. It's also been linked to improved skin health and a reduction in acne.
  • Milk Thistle: Milk thistle is renowned for its liver-protective properties. Drinking milk thistle tea can help support liver function and promote a healthier complexion.

Variety is the spice of life – and also the secret to a happy gut. Mix it up with different herbs and foods rich in prebiotics, probiotics, and fibers to keep your gut microbiome balanced. Remember, while herbal blends can be fantastic for supporting gut health, they're not overnight miracle workers. Consistency is key — incorporate them into your daily routine for the best results.

Having a self-care routine that includes meditation is one of the best things you can do to align your mind, body, and soul.

Lifestyle Habits for a Happy Gut, Glowing Skin

Ok so you've incorporated herbal tea into your diet and you're feeling like tackling another wellness challenge - changing your habits. Remember - symptoms are the language of the body and if you're struggling with skin or digestive issues, your body is letting you know you need to change course a bit. It's not just about the products you use, but also how you take care of yourself from within.

Here are some lifestyle choices that can support your gut-skin relationship:

1. Stress Management

I know you know this, and it's easier said than done. But a mindset shift away from the "hustle and grind" mentality is something you should be gently working towards. When you're stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that can cause inflammation and disrupt your digestive system. Our bodies can handle stress from time to time, but when it becomes chronic and you're living in a state of constant stress or worry, your body is going to have a difficult time going into a restore & repair state.

To keep stress under control:

  • Practice meditation. Spending just a few minutes each day doing deep breathing exercises or practicing mindfulness can significantly reduce stress levels. If you're not sure where to start with this, I recommend checking out this excellent book on healing the body through mental focus, meditation, and breathing exercises. If nothing else, the book will help you realize just how powerful the link is between our thoughts & the current state of our health.
  • Take a bath, go for a walk, or do something you enjoy. Even a 15 minute walk in nature can dramatically change your emotional state and help you feel more at peace.

2. Exercise

Excerise doesn't have to mean one hour every day at the gym. When I learned this lesson, I started prioritizing daily movement. A 15-minute walk after dinner or a few minutes on the stepper throughout the day is a huge improvement if you're used to not exercising often. Exercise is not only beneficial for your overall health but also for your skin. When you work out, it has the following effects on your skin:

  • Improved circulation: Physical activity increases blood flow, ensuring that essential nutrients reach your skin cells while toxins are eliminated.
  • Balanced hormones: Regular exercise helps regulate hormones in your body, which can reduce the likelihood of breakouts and skin irritation.

*Elle Woods voice* And let's not forget about those endorphins! Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy..and happy people have GLOWING SKIN from within! Whether it's going for a run, attending a yoga class, or dancing in your living room, find an exercise routine that you enjoy and make it a part of your daily life. Lately, I've been loving this small addition to my home gym that has made a serious impact on my well-being (phew, what a cardio workout!).

3. Adequate Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep is essential for both your body and skin to repair and rejuvenate. Here's why sleep is important for healthy skin:

  • Repair process: While asleep, your body works on repairing damaged skin cells and producing new ones.
  • Detoxification: During sleep, your skin goes through a natural detox process, getting rid of toxins and waste products.

Strive for 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night to allow your skin to reap the benefits of this nightly rejuvenation. And it's the sleep before 12 that counts the most so get to bed early!

Taking a Holistic Approach to Skin and Gut Care

When it comes to health, everything is connected. The gut-brain-skin axis is not just a fancy term; it's a superhighway of communication between your digestive system, your brain, and your skin. Think of them as the ultimate group chat where everyone's talking all at once—your gut bacteria, brain cells, and skin cells are constantly sending signals to each other.

How Your Gut, Brain, and Skin Interact

Here's a breakdown of how these three amigos influence each other:

  1. Gut Health: The central hub where it all happens. Keeping the gut happy means feeding it with the right stuff—fibers, prebiotics, probiotics, and yes, those soothing herbs we love.

  2. Brain Health: Stress less! Your brain can tell your gut to freak out, and vice versa. Finding your zen can keep both your mind and your stomach in harmony.

  3. Skin Health: It's the mirror reflecting how well the conversation between your gut and brain is going. A radiant complexion might mean they're having a good day!

How Your Skin Reflects Your Internal Balance

If you're noticing your skin throwing tantrums with breakouts or irritation, it might be whispering—or screaming—for help regarding an internal imbalance. Listen closely! If you suspect your stomach is plotting against you, seeking personalised advice from a healthcare professional is like hiring a top-notch translator for this complex three-way communication.

Remember, treating skin issues isn't just about slathering on creams and potions; it's about tuning into that gut-brain-skin gossip and making sure everyone's on the same page.

Love What You See...

The next time you look in the mirror and notice a blemish or redness, take a moment to reflect on what your skin might be trying to tell you. It could be a cue to pay attention to your gut health and emotional well-being. By nourishing your gut with the right nutrients and finding ways to manage stress, you can support not only your skin but also your overall health and happiness.
